No instructions needed
I am a rule follower. I live by the books. Let’s bring snacks into the movie theatre you say? No way! The signs say no. We might get caught. We could go to JAIL!! Or worse….we could get scolded. Seventeen items in my cart? Dangit, two over the fifteen items or less requirement. It’s fine you say? Just go ahead in that line? But…I have seventeen items…it says only fifteen, I can’t. Rule follower! I once used someone else’s membership ID card to get into a park…it was the most nerve-wracking day of my life. I don’t like breaking rules. Don’t ask me to do it because no sir, I won’t. It gives me no high in life to be a rebel. Now, I know what you’re thinking, goody-good. But, there is one thing that I do not follow. Instructions. I hardly ever read the instructions. “I’ll figure it out” is my life motto. And most often it doesn’t turn out quite as good as it’s shown in the picture.
From building a chair to baking a cake the instructions go out the door and I spend double the time just trying to “figure it out”. Ignoring the instructions is a good analogy for my relationship with Christ. He watches my stubborn self say, “it's alright, I’ll figure it out!”. He patiently waits until I finally admit, “okay...I need you”. And I constantly do. I need him. “My yoke is easy, and my burden is light”, Jesus says in Matthew 11:30. He stands by me with his hand reached out and waits as I sit for hours saying, “No! I got this!, until finally, looking up I call out, “I need you”. He continuously looks on me with love and patience and embraces my stubborn self time and time again.
What a loving God we have that I would push him away yet his arms do not close.
